HOW TO DETAIL A CAR EXTERIOR LIKE A PRO
5/5
Detailing a car’s exterior like a pro requires careful attention to detail, the right techniques, and quality products. Whether you’re preparing for a show or just want your car to shine, following these steps will help you achieve a professional-level finish.
1. Gather Your Supplies:
Start by assembling all the necessary tools and products. You’ll need car wash soap, microfiber wash mitts, drying towels, clay bar, polishing compound, wax or sealant, microfiber applicator pads, a dual-action polisher (optional), and tire cleaner and dressing.
2. Pre-Wash:
Rinse the car thoroughly to remove loose dirt and debris. Use a pressure washer or a gentle stream of water to avoid scratching the paint. Pre-washing helps prevent scratching during the main wash.
3. Washing:
Fill a bucket with the recommended amount of car wash soap and water. Use a high-quality microfiber wash mitt to gently clean the car’s surface. Start from the top and work your way down. Rinse the mitt frequently to prevent dirt buildup that could scratch the paint.
4. Clay Bar:
After washing, use a clay bar to remove embedded contaminants like tree sap, tar, and industrial fallout. Spray a clay lubricant on a small section of the car and glide the clay bar over the surface. The clay bar will pick up the contaminants, leaving the paint smooth.
5. Drying:
Use a clean, soft microfiber drying towel to pat the car dry. Avoid dragging the towel across the surface to prevent scratches. Pay extra attention to seams, crevices, and joints where water can collect.
6. Inspection:
Inspect the paint under good lighting to identify swirl marks, scratches, and other imperfections that need correction.
7. Polishing:
If the paint has swirl marks or minor scratches, consider using a dual-action polisher with a suitable polishing compound. Apply a small amount of compound to the pad and work it into the paint using the polisher. Use light pressure and keep the pad moving to avoid heat buildup.

8. Waxing or Sealing:
Apply a high-quality wax or sealant to protect the paint and enhance its shine. Use a microfiber applicator pad and work the product onto the paint in small, circular motions. Let it haze over, then buff it off with a clean microfiber towel.
9. Wheels and Tires:
Clean the wheels using a dedicated wheel cleaner and a brush to remove brake dust and grime. Use a separate brush and cleaner for tires. Once clean, apply a tire dressing to give them a deep, glossy appearance.
10. Exterior Glass:
Clean the exterior glass using a glass cleaner and a clean microfiber towel. For best results, use vertical motions on the outside and horizontal motions on the inside. This way, if there are streaks, you’ll know which side they’re on.
11. Trim and Plastic:
Restore the appearance of exterior plastic and trim pieces using a dedicated plastic trim restorer. Apply the product using an applicator pad, and wipe off any excess with a microfiber towel.
12. Final Touches:
Inspect your work for any missed spots or areas that need additional attention. Touch up as needed.
13. Maintenance:
To keep your car looking its best, regularly wash it using proper techniques, and apply a spray wax or detailer in between full wax or sealant applications. This will help maintain the shine and protect the paint.
Remember, patience and attention to detail are key when detailing a car like a pro. Take your time and follow these steps meticulously for a stunning and professional-looking finish.
